About Age From Serial
Age From Serial answers one practical question: how old is this water heater, air conditioner, heat pump or furnace? The answer is usually hidden in the serial number on the rating plate, but every manufacturer codes it differently, the rules are scattered across service manuals, warranty certificates and recall notices, and the copies that circulate online are often incomplete or wrong.
What the site does
It collects the decoding rules that manufacturers and U.S. government agencies have published, stores each one together with its source and the date it was checked, and applies them in a decoder that runs in your browser. It covers 9 brand families with 28 brand names. Where a rule is missing for a brand or an era, the site says so instead of guessing.
What it is not
The site is independent. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by any manufacturer, distributor or installer. It does not sell equipment, does not pass your details to contractors and does not give repair, safety or financial advice. Brand names appear only to say which equipment a rule applies to.

How the content is made
Every rule is read in the primary document it cites: a manufacturer's manual, catalog, warranty certificate or parts list, or a U.S. government recall notice. The worked examples on each family page come from those documents or are decoded strictly by their rules, and each one is an automated test of the decoder. Each family page lists its documents with the date they were checked, and the methodology page explains the standards we apply. If you find a serial that the decoder reads wrongly and you have a manufacturer document that shows the correct rule, please send it through the contact page.
